Juvenile Uaru develop significantly in both size and appearance as they mature. Adults can reach approximately 10–12 inches, so these small juveniles will eventually require a large aquarium with excellent filtration and plenty of swimming space. Driftwood, rocks, and secure hiding areas help create a comfortable environment.

Uaru are social cichlids and generally display a calmer temperament than many similarly sized cichlid species. They can be maintained with other appropriately sized, compatible South American fish, although individual temperament can vary, particularly as they mature or form pairs.
