Black Catfish Trachycorytes Trachycorytes 4-5" Live Rare Freshwater Aquarium Fish

The Black Catfish (Trachycorytes trachycorytes) is a fascinating and uncommon South American freshwater catfish, admired for its dark coloration, distinctive body shape, prominent whiskers, and intriguing bottom-dwelling behavior. This unusual species is an excellent choice for experienced aquarists looking to add a rare and interesting catfish to their collection.

The fish you will receive measures approximately 4–5 inches.

The Black Catfish features a robust, elongated body with dark brown to nearly black coloration that provides excellent camouflage among driftwood, rocks, and natural aquarium decorations. Its prominent barbels help it explore its surroundings and locate food, particularly during periods of low light.

As it matures, Trachycorytes trachycorytes can grow into a substantial catfish, so a spacious aquarium should be planned for its long-term care. This species benefits from excellent filtration, clean, well-oxygenated water, stable water parameters, and adequate bottom space.

A natural aquarium setup with smooth rocks, driftwood, caves, and shaded hiding places is highly recommended. Black Catfish often prefer sheltered areas during the day and may become more active during the evening and nighttime hours.

This species is best maintained with appropriately sized, robust tankmates. Smaller fish that can fit into its mouth may be considered prey, and competition with other bottom-dwelling species should be monitored. Providing multiple hiding places can help minimize stress and territorial interactions.

As an omnivorous catfish with carnivorous feeding tendencies, the Black Catfish benefits from a varied diet of high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, frozen shrimp, fish-based foods, and other appropriately sized meaty foods. A balanced feeding routine supports healthy growth and overall condition.

The Black Catfish is an excellent addition to specialized South American aquariums, offering an unusual appearance and fascinating natural behavior that appeals to collectors of rare catfish.

Each fish is carefully selected and professionally packed with oxygen and insulation for transportation. Photos are representative; natural variations in coloration, markings, and overall appearance may occur. Fish are sold unsexed.

You will receive 1 healthy Black Catfish (Trachycorytes trachycorytes), approximately 4–5 inches.
