Black Hoplias Wolf Fish 4-5" Live Freshwater Predator Hoplias Macrophthalmus

The Black Hoplias Wolf Fish (Hoplias macrophthalmus) is an impressive and highly sought-after South American predatory fish, admired for its powerful body, broad head, large mouth, and formidable teeth. Also commonly associated with the Giant Wolf Fish, this remarkable species is especially popular among experienced aquarists and collectors of rare freshwater predators.

The fish you will receive measures approximately 4–5 inches.

The Black Hoplias features a muscular, elongated body with dark brown, charcoal, and blackish coloration that provides excellent camouflage in its natural habitat. Its powerful jaws, sharp teeth, and distinctive appearance make it one of the most fascinating predatory fish available in the aquarium hobby.

As it matures, Hoplias macrophthalmus can grow into an exceptionally large and powerful predator, potentially exceeding 24 inches under suitable conditions. Due to its impressive adult size, strength, and feeding behavior, this species requires a very large, secure aquarium with excellent filtration, strong oxygenation, stable water conditions, and sufficient swimming space.

A natural aquarium environment with driftwood, large smooth rocks, subdued lighting, and secure hiding areas helps create a comfortable habitat. A tight-fitting, escape-proof lid is essential, as Wolf Fish are powerful jumpers.

The Black Hoplias is a highly aggressive and territorial predator. It is strongly recommended for a species-only aquarium, as it may attack or consume other fish, including tankmates of considerable size. Even similarly sized predators may not be safe companions.

As a carnivore, the Black Hoplias requires a varied diet of appropriately sized meaty foods, including thawed shrimp, fish pieces, and high-quality carnivore pellets once accepted. Live feeder fish are not necessary and may introduce parasites or disease. Feeding should be carefully managed to support healthy growth without overfeeding.

This extraordinary predator is best suited for experienced aquarists who understand the specialized care requirements of large, aggressive freshwater fish. Its impressive strength, prehistoric appearance, and fascinating hunting behavior make it an exceptional centerpiece for a dedicated predator aquarium.

Each fish is carefully selected and professionally packed with oxygen and insulation for transportation. Photos are representative; natural variations in coloration, markings, and overall appearance may occur. Fish are sold unsexed.

You will receive 1 healthy Black Hoplias Wolf Fish (Hoplias macrophthalmus), approximately 4–5 inches.
