Gulper Catfish 7-8" Live Freshwater Rare Predator Aquarium Fish Asterophysus

The Gulper Catfish (Asterophysus batrachus) is one of the most fascinating and unusual predatory catfish from South America. Famous for its incredibly large mouth, expandable stomach, and remarkable feeding abilities, this rare freshwater species is a highly sought-after addition to specialized predator aquariums.

The fish you will receive measures approximately 7–8 inches.

Native to the Amazon and Orinoco river systems, the Gulper Catfish features a broad, flattened head, smooth scaleless body, prominent whiskers, and a distinctive appearance that makes it instantly recognizable. Its oversized mouth allows it to swallow surprisingly large prey relative to its body size.

Gulper Catfish generally reach approximately 10–12 inches as adults. Despite their relatively compact adult size, they require a spacious aquarium with excellent filtration, stable water conditions, and adequate room to move comfortably. Smooth driftwood, caves, subdued lighting, and secure hiding areas help create a suitable environment.

This species is a specialized nocturnal predator and is best maintained in a species-only aquarium. Its enormous mouth allows it to consume fish that may appear too large to swallow, making most community tankmates unsuitable. It should not be housed with smaller fish or other animals that could be mistaken for food.

As a carnivore, the Gulper Catfish benefits from a varied diet of appropriately sized, high-quality meaty foods such as thawed shrimp, fish pieces, and other suitable aquatic foods. Feeding should be carefully managed to avoid overfeeding. Live feeder fish are not necessary and may introduce parasites or disease.

The Gulper Catfish is an exceptional choice for experienced aquarists seeking a truly unique freshwater predator. Its unusual anatomy, fascinating behavior, and impressive appearance make it a remarkable centerpiece for a dedicated aquarium.

Each fish is carefully selected and professionally packed with oxygen and insulation for transportation. Photos are representative; natural variations in coloration, markings, and appearance may occur.

You will receive 1 healthy Gulper Catfish (Asterophysus batrachus), approximately 7–8 inches.
